Unsuccess.
Trying to think of a specific teaching strategy that doesn't work is hard. Then I realized that it isn't the strategy that doesn't work, it how you use the strategy that is the problem. For example. Lecture is a necessity in math class. BUT Lecture is horrible if you try to do lecture for the whole class. I like to mix lecture with Drill and Practice, or with questioning. Without the interaction part the lesson is lost upon the students.

I agree with you. I have tried to do lecturing and the students shut down after fifteen minutes. If I wasn't so ridiculously good looking they would probably shut down after five minutes.
ReplyDeleteSo that is my problem!! My students can usually last about 8-10 minutes until they start to fidget and ignore me. If I were just better looking...........
ReplyDeleteTry a strategy called Bookends. It sandwiches a chunk of lecture with a "talk-back" where they tell you what they just heard and understood.
